I have an idea.
Here it is:
I’m going to write my next book on Substack, in installments à la serial releases by Armistead Maupin, et al . I will write a small section, post it, and you can comment, offer your own insight and interpretation/knowledge, etc.
If you want to.
Or you can just read it.
Or not.
Then I’ll post the next section. At the end I will publish the entire thing in actual book form, after I go back and edit the hell out of it. If people provide additional info and insight on Substack during the writing of the book that I end up using in the final draft I will credit you in the acknowledgments section of the actual published book. I like the idea of collaboration to end up with the most fascinating, accurate and deep interpretation I can bring.
Three catches:
I’m going to put this installment series up for paid subscribers only. This will be a massive project with a big payoff that I think only a small subsection or people will be interested in so I want to make it a really special experience for us. You will also get to essentially get a preview of the book and witness my book writing process, although the final book will include, of course, all my edits, which I will not (and could not) put you through on Substack.
Each post will disappear after a certain period of time (perhaps a week—I haven’t decided yet—suggestions welcome).
The book is going to be a long-anticipated (by me) deep explication of one movie: Guy Ritchie’s Revolver (which you may have zero interest in or you may be obsessed with it, like me. If you haven’t seen it, you’re in for…something).
But I will tell you, the movie maps out the path to Freedom, with a capitol F—from ego delusion. That’s the giant payoff.
I’m so raring to go on this project because it’s one I’ve wanted to do for a long time, and actually started awhile ago. But I’m starting over. As I envision it currently (anything and everything may change along the way), I will make my way through the entire film, scene by scene, and it will be meant to be a multi-media affair, by which I mean that you’ll watch the movie with me as I go through the explication. Revolver is available for streaming on Amazon Prime (and other places, I’m sure), but you may need to purchase it.
Rotten Tomatoes awarded Revolver a 15% on their “tomatometer” and describes the movie (of which there are three versions), as “an incoherent misfire”. I couldn’t disagree more. But they just didn’t get it. And…what can you expect out of a tomato.
Revolver is the most brilliant film I have ever seen, hands down. I have viewed it probably somewhere between 30 and 100 times, at least—I have no idea—I’ve watched it A LOT. I love it more with every viewing since my introduction to this film somewhere around 10 years ago by a mentor of mine, Amir Zoghi (many thanks).
During the writing of this book I will:
a) Attempt to contact GR himself somewhere along for a review of my work (which I imagine will be entirely fruitless—I’m sure he’s got better things to do, but who knows).
b) Exhaustively research the dense and layered symbology of the film including Egyptian, Kabbalistic and Numerological references (of which I am not at all an expert on but will do my best to dig as deeply as possible to unlock the specific symbols as they appear in this film).
c) Research and include GR’s own comments about the film and use those as guiding principles in my explication.
d) Include time stamp notes in my posts so you can follow along with the film.
e) Respond to comments as appropriate.
I plan to begin this project next week. I’d love for you to come along for the ride!
